Is winter your favorite time of year, or do the short days and chilly temps have you contemplating a move to warmer regions? Whatever your feelings about winter, you can tweak your décor to make your home more inviting this time of year.

1. Introduce warm tones.

The interior of your home should provide a visual contrast to the cool neutrals – icy white, dull gray, fading brown – that you often see outside in the wintertime. There’s no need to repaint or buy new furniture, but it is worthwhile to change out some of your décor elements. Some examples:

  • Replace cream or pastel candles with maroon or deep green ones.
  • If you have styled items on a shelf or cabinet, swap out more summery pieces for things like pine cones and bowls of nuts in their shells, as these deep browns will give off a cozy vibe.
  • Add some jewel-toned accent pillows and throws to your living room seating. These soft items will also make everything feel more snuggle-worthy! (Bonus: velvets and faux furs will instantly glam up the space.)

2. Take inspiration from nature.

One of the best seasonal decorating strategies is using actual seasonal items from outdoors. Fresh pine boughs stay nice for quite a while even if they’re not in water, so they can adorn shelves, cabinet tops, and the like. You can also fill a white ceramic vase with everything from dry twigs to holly branches to red roses. Glass or crystal bowls are also your friend. Load them up with pine cones or nuts for an instant centerpiece with natural flair.

3. Embrace a holiday theme.

If you love Christmas, there’s no reason not to incorporate it into your winter décor. Sometimes the problem is that we have beautiful Christmas themed items like nativity scenes, heirloom snowman candles, or charming collectibles but nowhere to display them. Having a glass wall shelf installed gives you a place to showcase these items and then replace them with other seasonal pieces as the months go by.

4. Make your house a cozy retreat.

Whether you come home brightened up by the winter landscape and brisk air or are seeking solace amid a season you dislike, a warm and cozy oasis is always appealing.

  • Take inspiration from the Danish concept of hygge which finds comfort in coziness and the simple joys of life – a warm afghan, quality time with loved ones, a roaring fire, flickering candles, a mug of something warm and yummy, and so forth. Add items to your home that you find comforting and cheerful and remember that winter can be a reminder to slow down and focus on what really matters.
  • Consider every room in the house. For instance, it’s easy to come up with ways to make a living room or bedroom cozier, but what about a bathroom? How about an extra plush bath mat, or if you’re ready for a remodel, you could switch to a glass enclosed steam shower and have heated flooring put in.
  • Enjoy the process. Slow down and savor the joy of making your house more comfortable and welcoming. This could mean curling up with a blanket, cup of cocoa, and your phone for some thumb-shopping, but better yet you’ll be creating some of the items used to enhance your home. 5. Let professionals help with home improvements.

It’s hard to beat a rewarding DIY project, but some improvements will be beyond your skill level or comfort zone. For instance, installing a frameless glass enclosure for a steam shower is best left to trained glaziers.
