Opt for a mini home gym instead of some weights stashed in a corner of your living room or a treadmill taking up bedroom space. Giving your home workout venue an upgrade not only improves the ambiance of your exercise area but can even boost your motivation to start training! ABC Glass and Mirror, Inc. of Manassas Park, VA offers custom gym mirrors to give your mini gym the perfect finishing touch.

1. Find a space that can be converted into a home gym. Most any unused space can work. Possibilities include a room in the basement, a spare bedroom, or even a home office that is no longer being utilized. Make sure that it is a room with privacy or at least with windows that can easily be fitted with blinds or curtains. A fully enclosed space with a door is also desirable so that the exercise machines and free weights do not detract from the décor in the rest of your home.

2. Address aesthetic concerns in the space. The room that you’re converting into a gym may need a few aesthetic improvements before you bring in your elliptical! Begin by clearing out the room’s current contents, or at least as many of them as possible. If repainting is in order, consider going beyond white to give the room personality and warmth. You may wish to paint at least one wall a high-energy color such as orange or yellow in keeping with the room’s purpose as an exercise space. Other cosmetic improvements might include:

  • Updating the ceiling light to something modern and industrial.
  • Replacing stained or cracked light switch plates with sleek metal ones.
  • Adding some type of built-in storage such as glass shelving in one corner. (Use this to store towels, energy bars, and workout videos.)
  • Upgrading the room’s hardware such as door knobs and curtain rods.

3. Create a workout-friendly floor in the room. This will be especially important if you are using a basement room with a concrete floor. In this case you may wish to consider adding rubber flooring or at least covering all the concrete with interlocking high density foam tiles. These changes are important for both your comfort and your safety as you workout. On the other hand, if you’re converting a bedroom with carpet or wood floors, you may be able to simply add a few exercise mats to the space.

4. Include a gym mirror for a professional look and feel. Adding a gym mirror will give your space the atmosphere of a “real” gym. ABC Glass and Mirror, Inc. can custom-cut a large mirror to cover one of the walls in your home gym. We can work with very large pieces of mirror glass, but sometimes these won’t fit through a room’s entrance. When this happens, we simply create the gym mirror using two or more pieces of mirror glass installed adjacent to one another. Including a gym mirror improves the room’s aesthetics, but it’s also a tool in your workout regimen. Gym mirrors are useful for checking form, monitoring progress, observing improvements, correcting mistakes and so on.

5. Finish off the mini gym with the exercise equipment of your choice. How you outfit your new home gym depends on the preferences of you and other family members who will be using it. Do you want a wall mounted TV for watching exercise videos? Or perhaps you prefer weight machines? Some like to use free weights with a bench, while others workout best on equipment like treadmills and ellipticals. Bring in the items that harmonize best with your exercise style and begin working out in the convenience of your own home.
