The town of Vienna, VA is located in Fairfax County and has a history going back to the 1700’s when Colonel Charles Broadwater made his home there. A small village known as Ayr Hill was developed. However, in the 1800’s the name was changed to Vienna in honor of the hometown of a prominent new citizen, Dr. William Hendrick, who made this change a condition of his residence in the town.
During the Civil War era, Vienna was the site of the Battle of Vienna, in which Confederate forces repelled a would-be Union takeover. Shortly after the war, a public school was founded for black students. A few years later, a public school for white children was built, and education remained segregated in Vienna until the 1960s.
