Leesburg was established in 1758 and is the seat of Loudoun County, VA. Its population as of 2016 was 52,607. Like many towns in Northern Virginia, Leesburg has morphed from a rural “small town” into a thriving modern community. Modern day Leesburg is the home of historic sites as well as the Leesburg Executive Airport, the National Conference Center, and Iridium Communications, Inc.
The land that is now Leesburg was once home to various Native American groups. In fact, local lore tells of a memorable 18th century battle between warring tribes at this location. At the same time, however, the area was being settled by new groups, and plantations and farms sprung up. In 1803 the “Leesburgh” post office was founded.
During the Civil War, Leesburg was the site of a Confederate victory at the Battle of Ball’s Bluff and served as the headquarters for Southern Colonel John Mosby and his raiders! Leesburg was controlled by both Union and Confederate forces at different times during the war and became the location of the United States’ smallest national cemetery at the site of the Ball’s Bluff engagement.
Today, residents of Leesburg are served by Loudoun County Public Schools as well as a number of private schools. Top employers include Loudoun County, the town of Leesburg, the Federal Aviation Adminstration, and Wegman’s Food Markets. Leesburg is proud of its historic roots and hosts a variety of events and festivals throughout the course of the year.
