The history of Fort Belvoir dates back to a World War I era military camp. The base was originally named after a Union general from the Civil War, Andrew A. Humphreys. However, in 1930, the name was changed to Fort Belvoir in honor of the historic Fairfax family plantation of Belvoir, which had once been been situated on the land.
