Fairfax Station has a 166 year history and began as a literal train station on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad line. At different points in its development it was also known as “Lee’s Station” and “Swetnam,” but the name “Fairfax Station” was established for good in 1921. This name is derived from both its location in Fairfax County and its railway station origins.
In the 1800’s Clara Barton worked in Fairfax Station caring for wounded soldiers from both the North and the South. She made her headquarters at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which had been built in 1858 to serve immigrants from Ireland. Barton used the local train station as a hospital after the Second Battle of Manassas.
Today, Fairfax Station includes beautiful neighborhoods as well as forest areas where wildlife can be found. Major transportation routes include Ox Road and the Fairfax County Parkway.
