Dunn Loring, VA is a census designated place in northeastern Fairfax County. It was the first subdivision to be recorded on the Fairfax County plat, and as of the 2010 census, Dunn Loring’s population was 8,803.
The area derives its name from early developers William and Elizabeth Dunn and George B. Loring. In the late 1880s, efforts were made to form a town of Dunn Loring, and both a railroad station and a post office were established. However, General William Dunn passed away before these plans could take root.
Then, in 1898, an army camp was established Dunn Loring because of the Spanish-American War, and the area experienced expansion and a boost in prosperity. Further development was begun by Fairfax Shield McCandish in 1912. In the post World War II era, the Dunn Loring area began to boom. As the decades passed, the region developed into the populous section of the DC metropolitan area that it is today.
Modern Dunn Loring is an affluent residential area at a location equidistant between Dulles International Airport and Reagan National Airport. In terms of natural features, it is beautified by streams flowing from Accotink Creek. Dunn Loring is also near the Capital Beltway, the town of Vienna, and I-66.
