Quantico is closely associated with the Marine Corps Base Quantico, and those driving into the town must go through a military security station. Many important entities are located on this base including Officer Candidate School, the Basic School, the FBI Academy, and the DEA training academy.
The town of Quantico is near two waterways: the Potomac River and Quantico Creek. This area was once home to the Potawomack people, and settlers from Europe arrived in the early 1600s. The Potomac River was an important route for trade and travel, so various settlements developed.
During the Civil War, the region was mostly peaceful until a 12 day long conflict near the war’s end. In the post-war period the railroad expanded into the Quantico area, and it eventually evolved into a tourist destination. The locale became more industrial in the early 1900s. The Marine Corps base was founded in 1917, and the present-day town of Quantico was incorporated in 1927.
