The city of Manassas, VA was previously known as Manassas Junction because of the intersection of two important railroad lines. Even through the Civil War period there was not much else in the area besides this junction of train tracks. However, in the post-war era Manassas developed so much that it was officially incorporated as a town in the 1870s!
During the Civil War, the Manassas Junction region was the site of significant fighting – the First and Second Battles of Bull Run. These are also referred to as the First and Second Battles of Manassas and took place in 1861 and 1862 respectively. Both were won by Confederate forces, but the railroad intersection was under Northern control for the majority of the war.
Manassas went on to serve as Prince William County’s county seat, and the courthouse is still in this location. Nevertheless, Manassas became an independent city – totally separate from the county – in the 1970s. Practically, this means that although the court house is within the city, it is technically part of Prince William County, not the city of Manassas.
