The town of Purcellville, VA is named after historic local businessman Valentine Vernon Purcell who opened a post office, blacksmith forge, and shop in the area in the 1800s. However, it traces its roots back to a settlement by Pennsylvanian James Dillon in the latter half of the 1700s.
A trail that became known as the “Great Road” went through the heart of the settlement and contributed to its development. Some stores and inns sprang up, and the area developed into a little town which took the name of Purcellville in the mid 1800s.
During the Civil War, Purcellville did not see any major battles. The region was largely under the influence of Southern partisan leader John Mosby, and a minor confrontation between Union and Confederate forces took place at nearby Heaton’s Crossroads. More significant perhaps was the 1864 pillaging of the town as punishment for its allegiance to Mosby and his men.
