The charming little town of Clifton is something of a novelty in Fairfax County, Virginia. Much of the region is urban and well populated, but Clifton is a tiny town largely bordered by horse country and woodlands sprinkled with luxury homes! This is mostly due to regulations limiting development which were enacted decades ago to protect the Occoquan Reservoir.
The land on which Clifton is situated was originally used for hunting by members of the Dogue tribe who lived near the Potomac and Occoquan Rivers. However, settlers from Europe arrived in the early 1700s and began to inhabit what is now the Clifton region. The area experienced further development with the coming of the Orange and Alexandria railroad in the late 1800s.
During the Civil War the Clifton area was impacted by this railroad expansion as well as the cutting of timber to be shipped out and used by Union forces. The railroad was often used and defended by Union troops, but was deserted for a time in 1863. After the war a train depot, post office, hotel, and church were established and the village of Clifton was born.
The town of Clifton experienced ups and downs in the 1900s, but citizens successfully strove to preserve the town and its historic heritage in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. Today, Clifton is a thriving community that hosts popular events including the Clifton Day Festival and an annual car show.
