Weekend Project: 3 Hot Trends You Can Bring to Your Bathroom
Before a bathroom is due for a renovation, it might be due for a glow-up. If your space is feeling dated, boring, or uninviting, consider a transformation that gives it a trending aesthetic. We’ll look at three approaches that are popular, not just in home décor, but in fashion or even one’s broader lifestyle. With a few purchases and weekend projects, you can give your bathroom an up-to-date makeover in the biophilic, quiet luxury, or clean girl aesthetic.
Biophilic Home Decorating
The biophilic approach embraces and celebrates all things natural. This take is rooted in the knowledge that the natural world is not just visually appealing, but also offers benefits for our mental and physical well-being. Biophilic design is typically layered onto a clutter-free space dominated by pale neutral tones and shades from the outdoors. Here’s how you could transform your bathroom in the biophilic style:
Declutter, deep clean, and organize. You might find that you need to add some wall shelves or a new cabinet in order to have enough storage to keep the room clutter-free.
Give the room a relaxing, natural color palette. This could involve painting the walls or even the vanity.
Load up on potted plants. The vanity counter, the floor, and even inside the shower are all great spots for greenery.
Bring in other items from nature. Incorporate natural materials like wood or stone. This could mean buying a marble soap dish or stripping the paint off a piece of furniture and refinishing it with shellac.
If your bathroom has a window, make the most of the natural lighting it offers. You may want to have obscure replacement glass put in so that you can eliminate window coverings altogether.
Quiet Luxury Decor
Also known as the “old money aesthetic”, this look showcases understated elegance and quality without ostentation. To give your bathroom a sense of quiet luxury, you will likely need to replace some bargain items with a couple high end pieces. Here is a possible approach.
Declutter, deep clean, and organize. (Noticing a pattern? We can’t really get away from this as the first step for improving any space.)
Look for ways you could upgrade the existing fixtures. For instance, does the glass shower door need its vinyl seal replaced? Could you put higher quality knobs and pulls on the vanity? What about upgrading a light fixture?
For a sense of quietly luxury, you want to eliminate kitsch and anything glitzy. Adorn the bathroom with a few tasteful items. You can splurge on some artwork or look for nice vintage pieces at local flea markets and antique stores.
A number of different colors can be used in this aesthetic, but they should generally be muted rather than bright or fluorescent. Neutrals and nature inspired tones work well. Refresh the bathroom with a coat of wall paint or repaint any surfaces with loud colors or patterns.
A room in the old money aesthetic should also have a “collected over time” feel. You can achieve this with genuine antique items from your attic or a shop, but you can also get new items that look old. For example, you could replace your standard vanity mirror with a custom metal-wrapped mirror made of “antique style” mirror glass which looks old even though it is new.
Clean Girl Aesthetic
Like “old money,” the clean girl aesthetic began in the realm of fashion but is now influencing home décor as well. More minimalist than maximalist, this approach embraces simplicity, organization, nature, and self-care. It’s easy to transform an ordinary bathroom with this style:
You guessed…declutter, deep clean, and organize. Tastefully organized items and a minimalist vibe are key to this aesthetic, so be open to purchasing some storage furniture/accessories.
As with any bathroom makeover, look around the room and see if anything is in need of repair, replacement, or a fresh coat of paint. Pale colors and neutrals are predominant in the clean girl aesthetic.
While you don’t need to load up on as many plants as you would for biophilic design, some fresh nature-based items like vases of cut flowers or potted plants are an important aspect of this décor mode.
You also want to make alterations with an eye to wellness and self-care. Easy additions include an aroma-therapy shower head kit, a basket of spa essentials, or new Turkish cotton towels.
If you already have self-care amenities – like a glass enclosed steam shower – make sure they are clean and in good working order.
