In her January 2021 post, “INTERIOR STYLE TRENDS 2021 | 6 Top Decorating Styles you should know now,” Elisabetta Rizzato of Italian Bark laid out the interior design modes likely to dominate 2021.

  • Japandi
  • Transitional
  • Grandmillenial
  • Cottagecore
  • New Nordic
  • Modern Mediterranean

Have you tried any of these styles in your home yet? Which ones would you like to incorporate into your next room makeover? Let’s take a look at the key features of some of these styles and what each has to offer your home.

Japandi

This style merges the cozy minimalism of Scandinavian interior design with the Japanese decorating aesthetic that focuses on smooth surfaces, items from nature, and also minimalism. To create this look, you’ll want to:

  • Totally declutter the space.
  • Include lots of natural materials and surfaces.
  • Use a muted palette with small pops of color.
  • Create contrasts by way of dark and light shades and varied textures.
  • Choose furnishings that blend clean lines with cozy touches like accent pillows and fluffy throws.
  • Look for pieces that are functional and well-made with simple, appealing silhouettes.

Transitional

This style artfully combines older and newer looks. Décor Aid defines it like this, “Transitional style refers to a mix of traditional and modern furnishings, fabrications, and decorative features that lend you more freedom when looking to decorate your home with ease as there’s no end to the directions you can take the design style.” This style is perfect if you want to update one aspect of a room – switching to a frameless glass shower for example – but aren’t ready to remodel the whole space. It also frees you to keep older pieces that have timeless beauty and quality while replacing once-trendy items that are now outmoded.

Grandmillenial

Grandmillenial or grandma chic decorating is similar to the transitional style, but it’s a bit bolder. You can place a lace doily on a contemporary end table or add a chintz loveseat to your modern living room in this interior décor mode. While including up-to-date elements, the grandmillenial style celebrates patterns, textures, and accent items from the past. If it reminds you of your grandma’s house, it’s perfect! Think needlepoint, floral patterns, and wedding china if you want to add some “grandma chic” to your living space.

Modern Mediterranean

A fresh take on Mediterranean design is also becoming more popular. Not yet familiar with classic Mediterranean style? Chelsey Bowen of HGTV identifies key features including “a neutral setting,” “stonework or rich terra cotta,” “From-the-Earth Color Scheme,” and “patterned tile.” This beloved style remains relevant and is seeing some new twists. Elisabetta Rizzato notes that modern Mediterranean design incorporates minimalism, warm neutrals, “bright whites,” and lightweight cloth elements into the classic Mediterranean aesthetic.
