Middleburg, VA is a small town with a vital role in Virginia’s horse country culture. Even at the beginning of the 20th century, Middleburg was a beloved destination for steeplechasing and foxhunting aficionados. In fact, it eventually became known as the “Nation’s Horse and Hunt Capital” and continues to be defined by all things equine.
Middleburg traces its roots to the late 1700s when Lt. Col. Leven Powell purchased the land known as Chinn’s Crossroads from Joseph Chinn and established a town. Some wanted to name the new town after Lt. Col. Powell, but he did not wish it, so the name Middleburgh (later Middleburg) was bestowed instead.
Like the rest of the region, Middleburg was impacted by the Civil War, but no major battles were fought in the town. During the Gettysburg Campaign in the middle of the war a couple clashes did occur in the area.
Middleburg is currently the site of the National Sporting Library, which is a research facility for field and equine sports. It is also home to the Red Fox Inn and Tavern, which dates back to the 1720s, as well as a historic district that hales back to the 1800s.
