Haymarket is a Virginia town dating back to 1799. In earlier times it was the site of hunting and travel by Native American groups and was referred to as “The Crossroads.” However, at the end of the 1700s a town was designed by William Skinker with the approval of the Virginia General Assembly. For some time, it was the site of the district court which contributed to the town’s flourishing.
During the Civil War, however, disaster struck Haymarket as the entire town – with the exception of a church and several residences – was destroyed by fire during a Union incursion. The town was not repopulated until after the war ended in 1865.
In the 1990s, Haymarket almost became the site of a Disney theme park. In fact, this plan progressed to the point of The Walt Disney Company buying property and coming up with a name for the new park – Disney’s America. However, a number of residents opposed the idea. The land ended up being sold to a private citizen, and most of it was subsequently developed.
