The independent city of Falls Church is located in Northern Virginia and is included in the Washington metropolitan area. It is one of the nation’s most affluent locales, and Fortune 500 businesses Northrup Grumman and General Dynamics have Falls Church mailing addresses. However, this modern city has roots reaching back to at least the late 1600s!
In the early part of the 20th century an old cottage was demolished in Falls Church, and one of its chimneys bore the date, 1699. In fact, the city takes its name from a Church of England house of worship built in 1734 – The Falls Church. Although this area was settled so long ago, however, it did not receive official township status until later, in 1875.
Two famous Americans were members and vestrymen at The Falls Church, George Washington and George Mason. Also, the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed from the steps of this building in 1776. In addition to its significance at the time of the American Revolution, Falls Church also has an interesting Civil War era history. It saw Confederate occupation and, later, raids by Mosby’s Raiders.
Today, Falls Church is home to fascinating historic sites, important employers such as BJ’s Wholesale Club, and a well-known farmers market. Residents are served by the Falls Church City Public Schools, St. James Catholic School, and Grace Christian Academy.
